CARTOONS

1985-1989

I had always loved drawing by hand, but favored the ability of cameras to create whole images instantly, and do so again and again from all angles. Then “computer drawing” appeared in the early 1980s, which allowed for not only correcting mistakes, but creating an infinity of variations. In the mid 1980s I partnered with Santa Clara University colleagues in the Engineering and Communications departments to purchase two computer systems for the Dept. of Art and Art History. Many nights I stayed for hours after teaching, experimenting with these magical new machines, which at the time created images under 1MB with 256 colors. The resulting Cartoons playfully explore this new medium, an upending of traditional art-making techniques.
